What Is Hair Loss?

You might ask, what does hair loss have to do with skin?

Hair is actually a protein filament that grows from follicles deep in the skin up through the top layer of your skin. Your hair helps to regulate body temperature and also serves to protect your scalp. Almost everyone experiences some degree of hair loss at some point in life.

Who Is at Risk for Hair Loss?

Hair loss affects both men and women and can be caused by many factors, many of then genetic. Some factors that can increase your risk of hair loss include:

Hair Loss Symptoms

There are many different types of hair loss. Some are preventable, while others are largely genetic. The four most common types of hair loss include:

Androgenetic Alopecia – The most common form of hair loss, this genetic condition is otherwise known as male or female pattern hair loss. Symptoms include receding hairlines or a thinning area in the crown in men and a widening of the part or overall hair loss in women.

Telogen Effluvium – This condition is characterized by a rapid onset of hair shedding, often triggered by stress, illness, dieting or even some medications.

Alopecia Areata  – Typically characterized by sudden onset and includes spotty, patchy or circular areas of hair loss. Hair is easily broken and comes out in clumps. Though most people with this condition are otherwise healthy, it can be associated with certain diseases and immunological disorders.

Chemical/Traction Alopecia – Generally caused by hair care products and treatments or tension applied to the hair during styling.

Hair Loss Treatment

There are many different treatments for hair loss available today ranging from topical and oral medications to laser therapy and hair transplantation. Discuss with your doctor which treatment is the best fit for you.

Recent research has shown that platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) is effective at treating hair loss due to alopecia.
