What are Cysts?
Cysts are caused by a non-contagious skin cell build up deep within the skin. They are most commonly found on the face, neck, and torso, but can be found on almost any part of the body. Bothersome bumps under the skin often bring patients to see a dermatologist, especially given that cysts can produce a smell and a thick white or yellow discharge.
Treatment
Some patients may try to pop or drain a cyst on their own. This is not recommended and those who attempt this method will find that the cyst returns shortly after.To ensure that the cyst does not come back and to avoid infection, a surgical procedure should be performed by a dermatologist to remove the cyst lining and its contents. If the lining is left in the skin, the cyst may recur. Occasionally, antibiotics are used to reduce redness, inflammation, and discomfort.
What Are Lipomas?
Lipomas feel like soft, compressible bumps underneath the skin. Formed of composed fat cells, a lipoma is a non-cancerous tumor. A patient may discover one or several lipomas, depending on their genes. Most people find them on their torso, but they can also be found on the neck, forearms, and underarms. These tumors are not dangerous, but are often bothersome if they are large or located in sensitive areas.
Treatment
Lipomas may be removed surgically by your dermatologist, or by a general surgeon if they are large. However, if they are not bothersome removal is not always necessary.
